We weren’t close friends but I always felt that Steve Ellis, the longtime sportswriter for the Tallahassee Democrat, and I had respect for each other. We both knew how tough it is to cover a beloved college team in the town where its located. There are lines that are difficult to cross.

Gold star: Julio Jones. The sensational receiver had been underachieving and got his coach so mad that Nick Saban spiked his headset. But Jones made up for it with the play of the game, a 73-yard touchdown on a bubble screen. Jones finished with four catches for 102 yards.
Silver star: Jevan Snead. The Ole Miss quarterback has had a spotty season but bounced back into form with a four-touchdown day, two rushing and two passing. The Rebels handled Northern Arizona, …

Gold star: Ryan Stamper. With Brandon Spikes suspended for the game, Stamper stepped in and got it done again. He moved from outside to middle linebacker and helped Florida limit Vanderbilt to three points. Stamper also had his second interception in two weeks.
Silver star: Morgan Newton. OK, it was only Eastern Kentucky. But give the freshman credit for managing the game for Kentucky. He completed 20-of-29 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Gold star: A.J. Jones. The Florida linebacker went from unsung hero to household name with his performance against Georgia. He seemed to be involved in every big play and had two interceptions and a sack.
Silver star: Montario Hardesty. The Tennessee tailback was the difference (along with South Carolina’s fumbles), scoring a pair of touchdowns in the Vols’ win over South Carolina.

Gold star: Walt McFadden. The Auburn defensive back was one of the keys to the Tigers getting back into the win column. He returned one interception 29 yards for a touchdown and had a later pick to stop the Ole Miss comeback attempt in the 33-20 win.
