Wrapping up the sports world

by Pat Dooley

Some thoughts that are pinging their way around my brain: * There are some who feel Michael Vick’s suspension from the first five games this season is unfair because he was already suspended last year. No he wasn’t. He couldn’t play last year because he was incarcerated. This isn’t The Replacements. You can’t play in the NFL when you are in jail. OK, so he was suspended but that’s not why he didn’t play in 2008. I think Roger … Read More »

Grading the coaches’ performances

by Pat Dooley

HOOVER, Ala. — And just like that, it’s over. SEC Media Days was interesting and bizarre and now it’s over for another year. With that in mind, I’m going to rate the coaches on how they did at the podium. Urban Meyer B+: I gave Meyer a great line to start his presentation and he didn’t deliver it with the proper enunciation so nobody laughed. You could hear crickets. But overall, he came through like a confident coach. Which he … Read More »

The Tebow inquisition

by Pat Dooley

The mystery continues. Or does it? The three coaches not named Urban Meyer said Thursday they voted Tim Tebow first-team on the coaches’ All-SEC preseason team. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt didn’t even wait to be asked. But did Nick Saban protest too much? “I voted for Tim Tebow,” Saban said. “I think he’s one of the most outstanding leaders I’ve ever seen in my coaching career. Certainly played a fantastic game against us in the SEC Championship Game last year. … Read More »

We’re back in Hoover

by Pat Dooley

You can tell how old a tree is by cutting it open and counting the rings and you can tell how old I am by cutting me open and counting how many SEC Media Days this is for your intrepid reporter. It hardly seems like a year since we drove through Dothan, made a stop at Webb’s 231 BBQ for lunch and ended up at the Wynfrey Hotel. But here we are, back for more. Who knows what this … Read More »

Ranking the coaches

by Pat Dooley

This just in — Nick Saban will be the next coach at Notre Dame. Come on, let’s get the rumor started. Saban will leave because he can’t coach without Julio Jones and he has close ties to the Midwest. He doesn’t want to coach against Urban Meyer and is afraid his team will end up in yearly BCS battles with Utah. Sources close to me have confirmed this is true. Just kidding, of course. Last I saw, Notre Dame has a coach. Let’s … Read More »

Collinsworth’s kids

by Pat Dooley

I had a nice conversation with Gator great Cris Collinsworth Tuesday for a story I wrote for our Gainesville Magazine. As you know, he will replace John Madden in the booth with Al Michaels on Sunday Night Football. Eventually, our conversation turned to his children because his daughter Katie just finished her freshman year at UF. Katie thought about going out for the UF soccer team, but decided against it. “She watched them and realized it was a whole different level,” Collinsworth … Read More »
