Love to hate them, baby

by admin

My buddy Mark Schlabach wrote on ESPN.com this week about the teams college football fans love to hate. He ranked his top 10 and had Ohio State at the top (Florida was fifth). Here’s the link: Schlabach: Top targets of fans’ ire I started thinking about how the rankings would be different if he looked at them solely from a Gator perspective. Here is what I believe would be a Florida fan’s top 10: 1. Georgia. The hate has … Read More »

Spurrier in good form

by admin

We know that Steve Spurrier’s golf game is in shape. As he was leaving the radio room, Spurrier spotted me and said, “Shot 72 in our coaches’ tournament the other day at Cobblestone. Bubba (Steve Jr.) shot 73.” Man, I better start working on my game. Spurrier also delivered the line of the day to the radio boys. He was asked about Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, who bolted the Atlanta Falcons before the season ended. “Bobby … Read More »

Richt’s wrong motivating ploy

by admin

Mark Richt apologized, in a way, for his Georgia team storming the field after the first score of the Florida-Georgia game last year. But don’t expect it to take anything away from the newly intensified rivalry. Richt said Thursday morning, after a long explanation about how it went down, that “in hindsight I asked the team to do an unsportsmanlike thing. I shouldn’t have done it. It easily could have turned into a big, ugly brawl.” Richt also said he called Urban Meyer on the Sunday following the … Read More »

Coaches that get “it”

by admin

Coaches have come to SEC Media Days full of themselves because of a roster that appeared to be loaded. Often, when we have checked in with them five months later, it wasn’t so good. The classic example was Alabama in 2000, a year removed from an SEC championship. Mike Dubose came to Birmingham talking about a national championship. The Tide lost its opener to UCLA, then lost games to Southern Miss and Central Florida. Alabama finished … Read More »

Tebow, and who else again?

by admin

When you look at the roster of players who are to be featured at SEC Media Days, it makes you wonder if there is a lot of star power in this league. There are only two quarterbacks here this week ” Tim Tebow and Mississippi State’s Wesley Carroll ” compared to six offensive linemen. Coaches around this league often like to bring seniors or players they can depend on to say the right … Read More »

Road trip to SEC Media Days

by admin

Ah, the wonders of modern technology. On our drive up to Hoover, Ala., for SEC Media Days, Robbie Andreu and I decided to stop for lunch in Dothan. So about 20 miles south of the sleepy town I pulled out my laptop, connected to the Internet and Googled “Dothan barbecue restaurants.” About 30 minutes later we were pulling into Webb’s 231 BBQ. If barbecue is your thing, this was truly a Love Shack. Inside the hole in the wall joint … Read More »
