OKLAHOMA CITY ” I’m standing on the corner of Flaming Lips Alley and Mickey Mantle Drive if for no other reason than to say I’m standing on the corner of Flaming Lips Alley and Mickey Mantle Drive.
I … didn’t … realize (ahh-ahh-ahh) that the Flaming Lips were from Oklahoma City. (For those of you without iPods or FM radio, “Do You Realize??” “yes, with two question marks ” is the …

You think Oklahoma City and I’m guessing you’re not thinking “the blues.” But in Bricktown, there is a place that has character and a character.
The character is French Hickman, a 77-year old practicing orthodontist who has a 2-year old daughter and a love for the blues. He opened Mojo Blues Cafe in another part of town before opening “The Biting Sow.” Sweet name, huh? I had to get a hat.
“A biting sow is the …

OKLAHOMA CITY ” On the flight out here, a stewardess on my flight was telling me about the memorial in Oklahoma City for the bombing victims at the federal building in 1995. And as she talked about it, her eyes began to well. They weren’t misty. These were big tears she was wiping away.
I was stunned that she felt that way and I guess part of the reason I was surprised was that the …

Being at the SEC Tournament reminds me of why I like the event … and why it is also one of the most flawed things in sports.
Consider that Florida played two games and both were against teams from the East. I like the way basketball does it better in matching up East vs. West in the first round.

It is my first trip here in six years and there have been improvements to Regions Park, the home of the Birmingham Barons. Still, you can’t help but wonder why the tournament continues to be …

PONTE VEDRA BEACH ” Fred Couples didn’t find out he was playing until Friday. Dustin Johnson didn’t find out until 7 a.m. Thursday.
The two golfers played early in the first round of The Players, one a 25-year veteran and the other a rookie, both making it in as alternates.
Couples found out last week he would get in because Will McKenzie decided to have knee surgery.
“If I was one player removed, …

PONTE VEDRA ” No Tiger may mean no buzz for The Players Championship but there are still 1.7 million reasons ” the winner’s share for this year’s event ” for the golfers to be grinding this week.
The course will play firm and fast which could open up the field even more. No matter what the conditions, it’s always difficult to predict golf even when Tiger Woods is playing (although he’s …
