A Capital location

by admin

This is why so many bowl games are played in Florida. Today it is 84 degrees. The pool at our hotel is mobbed with kids floating on innertubes (which cost $5 per) and the teenagers are getting tans. As long as you don’t leave the hotel, this is a beautiful place. But for those fans who are planning to make the trip to Orlando for the game, know that a cold front is expected … Read More »

What might have been

by admin

Your mind sometimes wanders at a bowl game site because there is a lot of dead time. Interviews are limited and you can only spend so much time working. So my mind wandered to the other side today ” the what if? place that I visit too regularly. So what if? What if Urban Meyer had listened to Notre Dame’s pitch and decided that was the right place for him? What if he had turned … Read More »

This Dec. 8 tops them all

by admin

NEW YORK ” It was one of those moments, one that you know you will always remember, mixed emotions seeping into the cold air of Central Park. Standing there at the Strawberry Fields memorial, listening to a homeless man deliver an eloquent testimonial to John Lennon on the 27th anniversary of his death, then sending a cell-phoned picture of the “Imagine” tribute to my daughter Jennifer who celebrated her 27th birthday on Saturday. And then … Read More »

Cool night at the awards show

by admin

How can an event be boring and wonderful at the same time? When it’s the Home Depot Awards Show at Disney’s Boardwalk. Like the Academy Awards, it’s too long, especially when you already know the winners. The media-friendly people who run the show hand the awards list to us as soon as the show goes on. We’re sworn to secrecy under the penalty of having to wear a Pluto head during the Main Street parade if … Read More »

What have you done lately?

by admin

I have seen a lot of upset people in the Bulldog Nation including writers who are supposed to be unbiased. They are incensed that LSU jumped Georgia and is playing for a national title, much the way Michigan fans were upset last year when the Wolverines were leapfrogged by Florida. Please, let me explain. The BCS is not a perfect system. It never will be a perfect system. We will never have a playoff so … Read More »

Poll position craziness

by admin

Maybe he’s still grumpy about the frozen oranges thrown from the stands in 1980. Or maybe Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger ranked Florida 21st in the final USA Today coaches’ poll. On the other hand, Houston Nutt ranked the Gators fifth. UF ended up 12th in the poll. But that wasn’t the biggest discrepancy in the final poll. New Mexico State coach Hal Mumme voted Hawaii No. 1 in his final poll. Ousted … Read More »

Ugly first half at SEC title game

by admin

It’s halftime at the SEC Championship Game and Colt David has just missed a 30-yard field goal that would have given LSU a 7-6 lead. I hope the second half is better. This has been pretty ugly so far. (By the way, Gator fans, just to let you know ” Tennessee now does a chant you may be familiar with. “It’s great … to be … a Tennessee Vol.” Just thought I’d let you … Read More »

I love this game

by admin

ATLANTA ” Was it always this loud in here? The SEC Championship Game is one of my favorite events to cover for a lot of reasons (Christmas parade Saturday morning, the Georgia Dome, the Marriott Marquis) and one of those reasons is the passion that the game brings. SEC fans love their SEC football. On the way to the game I spotted six different schools represented with T-shirts or hat. Six different schools that were not … Read More »

One angry football coach

by admin

Just when you thought you have seen it all, we have this ” a press conference two hours before the SEC Championship Game. LSU coach Les Miles called it to address ESPN’s report that he will be named Michigan’s head coach next week. “There was misinformation on ESPN and I think it’s imperative that I straighten it out,” Miles said. “I’m the head coach at LSU, I will be the head coach at LSU. I have no interest … Read More »
