ATLANTA ” I am in a familiar place surrounded by a lot of people I don’t know.
The Marriott Marquis is crawling with LSU fans and it certainly brings back a lot of memories. We were here three times in the last year for the SEC Championship Game, the SEC basketball tournament and the NCAA Final Four.
Florida went 6-0 in Atlanta during that stretch, but this is not a weekend for the Gators. …

There is little doubt Florida will be playing in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 once the bids are announced Sunday night.
But there is some.
Because if there was no chance that Florida could end up in a BCS bowl game, the BCS would release the Gators the way Wisconsin was released both by the BCS and the Cap One.
Here’s what could happen: LSU wins the SEC Championship Game and jumps …

Fitting.
That’s the only word to describe the last weekend of the SEC regular season.
Fitting.
A wild and crazy season came down to one final game and four overtimes.
Perfect.
The SEC title game may have lost some juice with LSU’s loss to Arkansas but this was still the best season for watching the league in my 30 years as a sportswriter.
I mean, what other league gives you 50-48 in …

It is fitting, the way this season has unwrapped, that we have to wait until the final regular-season game to see who will be in the SEC Championship Game.
We know LSU will be there. The Tigers kept their national title hopes alive, thanks in part to Ed Orgeron’s bone-headed decision to switch quarterbacks in the red zone at the end of the first half.
Tennessee kept control of its own destiny with the help of …

Last week, The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., put out a special basketball section. In it, the writer ranked the top 100 players in USC hoops history because it is the 100th year of South Carolina basketball.
John Roche was No. 1 and Alex English No. 2. But because South Carolina’s basketball history is less than legendary, you pretty much could make the list if you could touch the rim.
It got me to thinking, as …

Although he is expected to be able to play Saturday against Florida Atlantic, Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin is still suffering from a sinus infection and migraine headaches, Florida coach Urban Meyer said Monday morning.
“He’s still really sick,” Meyer said. “He was in here (Sunday). They put two IVs in him and he (vomited) one of them out.”
Meyer also said that the game played by quarterback Tim Tebow against South Carolina “might have been one of the greatest …

It’s a sign of the crazy college football season that we are 11 weeks into the season and nobody in the SEC has any idea where it will be bowling.
In the case of several teams, if they will be bowling.
There are so many scenarios for what could happen it can give you a headache trying to figure them all out. I saw one projection that had Alabama matched up with Florida State, which seems preposterous because …

This is the Heisman Trophy race where you are only as good as your last game. That makes Matt Ryan of Boston College on the outside looking in.
That includes on my mock ballot which used to be in my head before we started blogging. It wasn’t that he looked awful against FSU. It’s that he looked awful in the last two games against good defenses with the exception of one two-minute stretch.
Ryan can take solace in the fact …

Tell me if you’ve heard this before.
A team from the SEC loses a heartbreaker in the seventh game of the season and its hopes are dashed for a national championship. But the right mixture of things happen and when the SEC team wins in the conference title game it ends up going to the national championship against Ohio State.
There, the SEC team’s athleticism and speed are too much for the plodding Buckeyes.
We …

Back in September, when the Tim Tebow for He15man mania started gaining steam, I pointed out that voters shouldn’t seriously start mentally formulating their ballots before Nov. 1. It is down the stretch where performance matters the most and if you are mentally penciling in your ballot on Sept. 30, well, that’s just dummy.
But it’s November now and the ballots should arrive in the mail soon. So here is how mine would look if I had …
