SEC Insider: Southern discomfort

by admin

What a mess. Not Florida’s offense in the first half or its last drive Saturday night although it was. I’m talking about the SEC race. Five weeks into the season, it couldn’t be more wide open. And it could get even more scrambled this week. I’ll say this ” if LSU gets past Florida, it’s going to be difficult for anybody to catch the Tigers, especially because realistically there are only two teams ” Alabama and … Read More »

Blame it on Auburn

by admin

Because his team has lost to South Florida and Mississippi State this year, it appears Tommy Tuberville is in trouble again. We knew he was in trouble because he lost to Mississippi State. Half of the four SEC teams Sylvester Croom has beaten fired their coach later that year. Talk about a coach-killer. But it’s hard for me to believe that anybody could think about dumping Tuberville. Because what is happening to Auburn this year is Auburn’s fault. Some … Read More »

Inside The SEC: Myths debunked

by admin

It’s a different SEC this season. On Saturday, several myths were debunked on the fields of the league which leads to more questions. 1. Kentucky always blows big games. Well, the Wildcats used to always find a way to blow it. But that’s two in a row won late by Rich Brooks and this one was more impressive because the win over Arkansas came on the road. Can Kentucky win the East? Right now, it certainly seems possible. … Read More »

For the birds

Auburn has the legend of the War Eagle. We have the legend of the pigeon. Early in the first quarter of Saturday’s game between Florida and Tennessee, this pigeon comes flying into the press box making everybody duck for fear of pigeon waste landing on our heads. But the pigeon flew in front of one of our reporters and perched. And it didn’t move for the rest of the quarter. It was weird. He just sat there with his eyes … Read More »

Inside the SEC: Best and Worst

by admin

The SEC continues to be a strange league. Some of it is difficult to explain. Raise your hand if you thought Brandon Cox would be benched by the second game. Or that Auburn and Tennessee would be a combined 2-4. Weird. We won’t talk about the wins the SEC had over cupcakes like Western Carolina or South Carolina State (although Georgia found a way to look bad in an easy win). This week Inside the SEC looks … Read More »

A sign of things to come?

by admin

It’s more truth than myth ” you know a lot more about the Florida football team after the annual Tennessee game. There have been rare occasions since the two teams started to play on a regular basis in 1990 when that hasn’t been the case. I would say 1997 was probably one case when it didn’t happen. That Florida team looked as if it was picking up where the national champs left off after handling the Vols, but … Read More »

Beyond the SEC boxscores: LSU is looking good

by admin

LSU carried the SEC banner proudly Saturday night by thrashing Virginia Tech, but the conference didn’t have a good weekend. Auburn’s loss to South Florida was not a stunner because the Bulls were a trendy upset pick. But the way Auburn lost left us with a lot of questions after two dizzying weeks of college football. For example: What’s the deal with quarterback Brandon Cox? A lot of people thought he was ready to have a big season. He struggled in the opener … Read More »

Hum-drum gameday

by admin

There is buzz and there is buzz, and this game’s buzz is so low you need a hearing aid to make sure it’s there. This game has all the buzz of a Vanilla Ice concert. It shouldn’t be that way with a dangerous Troy team in town, but it always seems to be the case except when Miami sneaks into that second-game spot. The first game is a family reunion and the third game is Tennessee, so the … Read More »

Can the AAFL thrive?

by admin

Team Florida was introduced at a news conference Wednesday and the new All-American Football League team has star power. It was like a Who’s Who of Gator greats, was really well organized and impressive. I kept getting the same question from those who are involved in the new spring football league, “What do you think?” I think I’ve seen them all. I covered the World Football League and the United States Football League. Both failed because of money issues. The … Read More »

Beyond the SEC boxscores: The first Saturday

by admin

The first week of SEC play saw the league do well, especially compared to the Big 10 (Appy State rules) and the ACC (Al Groh Watch is on after loss to Wyoming). But then came Tennessee. The Vols embarrassed Cal a year ago, but on Saturday night it was the Bears who looked like the dominant team. We keep hearing about SEC speed, but the Volunteers looked slow compared to Cal, especially on DeSean Jackson’s 77-yard punt return. The man … Read More »
