The Boilermakers are far from the tallest team Florida has played this season. Carl Landry is the inside presence and goes 6-foot-7. But he is one of those players who imposes his will on you.
I talked to UF assistants Donnie Jones and Lewis Preston before the Purdue-Arizona game and they compared Landry to former Gator Udonis Haslem. It’s an excellent comparison. He’s not tall, not long, but the next thing you know he’s not another rebound.
This Purdue team played hard …

We tend to get provincial covering the SEC so Friday was a chance to see a highly touted player from another part of the country – Nevada’s 6-foot-11 forward Nick Fazekas.
I had been warned by a Nevada beat writer not to get sucked in by a bad half by Fazekas and yet I did. He scored four points in the first half against Creighton and had four turnovers.
By the time the game was over and Nevada had won in overtime, …

I’m watching practice at the New Orleans Arena, but mostly I’m watching Al Horford.
After suffering another ankle tweak against Arkansas on Sunday, Horford is one of the big questions for the Gators.
But I can tell you that he looks fine out on the court right now. He’s moving well and doesn’t seem to have any ill effects from the injury. Horford told me before practice that his ankle is coming along and he’s cleared to play.

The first time you walk into the site for an NCAA Tournament first round is still exhilarating. You have no idea how long the ride will last, which is part of the thrill.
The city has little buzz for this event. There is almost no signage to indicate there is a big event in town. They’re more concerned with the St. Patrick’s Day parade than who wins the Arizona-Purdue game. On Thursday, the local paper devoted more space to the NFL …

It wasn’t until I started walking down Bourbon Street that it hit me howlong it has been since I’ve been to New Orleans. The media that coversFlorida used to be here all the time.
I made trips here in 1994, ‘96 and ‘00 for Sugar Bowls, ‘97 to cover DannyWuerffel’s first NFL game, ‘01 for a NCAA Tournament regional and ‘03 forthe SEC Tournament. But it has been four years and one destructivehurricane since I visited the Big Easy. …

On a radio show I was on the other day, someone was making fun of
Joakim Noah’s looks, which bugs me for a lot of reasons. I went all
sensitive on the dude and told him there is more to a person than the
way he looks. I said of all the Gators I have covered, Joakim would top
my list of dinner guests.
That got me to thinking about who would be in my top 10 if I was having a dinner party …

The No. 1 seed overall and a top seed for the first time in school
history, the target on their backs won’t be anything unusual for these
Florida Gators.
I was talking to one of UF’s assistants
during the SEC Tournament and he was kind of hoping Florida would be a
two seed just to use it for motivation. But that was before the Gators
cemented their top-seeded status with a third straight SEC Tournament
title.
The Midwest bracket is not an easy one. The …

I think she’s crazy.
But she was right.
At halftime of
Florida’s semifinal win, my wife packed my daughter in the car and
headed for Atlanta, figuring that if Mississippi rallied she could turn
around north of Lake City. That wasn’t necessary. So she rolled into
town at 10 p.m. Saturday to watch the Gators play on Sunday.
It
says a lot about what this team means to so many people that she would
make the drive. Karen and Kelsey also got up Sunday morning and made a
poster with …

Think CBS was rooting for Florida today?
This was hardly the semifinal they were looking for today. And an ole Miss-Mississippi State final? The ratings would be somewhere below re-runs of “The Tony Danza Show.”
On the ride home from the Georgia Dome Friday night, someone mentioned that they didn’t know if an all-star team made up of the other 11 SEC squads could beat Florida. I had to remind him that Florida lost three times in the conference.
But if I was …
