Grading the coaches’ performances

by Pat Dooley

HOOVER, Ala. — And just like that, it’s over.

SEC Media Days was interesting and bizarre and now it’s over for another year. With that in mind, I’m going to rate the coaches on how they did at the podium.

Urban Meyer B+: I gave Meyer a great line to start his presentation and he didn’t deliver it with the proper enunciation so nobody laughed. You could hear crickets. But overall, he came through like a confident coach. Which he is.

Mark Richt B: Didn’t answer the Florida-Georgia question so he gets points off.

Steve Spurrier C: He was fine when he was talking about football but looked beaten down when talking about his ballot gaffe. Still got a few laughs.

Rick Brooks A: Funniest guy all week. I’ve come around to him.

Lane Kiffin A-: Really good storyteller. Just talks a little too fast.

Bobby Johnson B-: He goes for the laughs on occasion but not everybody gets the jokes.

Bobby Petrino A-: Totally different guy than a year ago. Very confident.

Les Miles C-: Long answers that didn’t really say anything.

Nick Saban B: He was pretty good until he made the analogy that we fight wars so he can keep his ballot secret.

Dan Mullen D+: You could tell it was his first rodeo. He was all over the place and said excited or exciting at least 45 times.

Gene Chizik F: I feel bad for the Auburn writers. He has the personality of a used napkin.

Houston Nutt B-: He was OK, nothing special, answered all the questions.

Time to head home.

I agree, Rich Brooks is a classy coach who has that funny/likable old man appeal. If it were not so far north I think more players would go play for him because Joker is a great OC, Sanders is a good QB Coach and Ortmeyer is good too. Overall they might be the most under rated staff in the country. Not to mention they get picked last every year and NEVER finish last.

Great comment on Gene Chizik, “the personality of a used napkin”. What was Auburn thinking?

I plan to use this line for some story telling, and probably won’t give you fair credit.

You’re right on Les Miles. He didn’t say much. Feel there is something strange about LSU this year. Like, they’ll be really good or really bad.
